Top 3 Issues in Trinidad

Trinidad is plagued by several issues which need urgent attention. As with any problem solving exercise, we need to properly identify the issues before we can provide recommendations. I think it is clear that the current government needs our help to identify the issues. What do you think should be on the top 3 list?

  1. Wow…Great site. Hopefully you will post all comments and not only those that fit your agenda like the Trinidad Express.

I think crime is by far the most pressing issue. I still remmeber being able to sleep with the front foor unlocked. We didn’t even need burglar proofing. What happened to our lovely country?

  2. 1. Economy. Fix that and people will have no reason to steal. ITs that simple.
    2. Crime. How can we feel proud of a country where you don’t feel safe ANYWHERE?
    3. Environment. I am ashame to say it but Trinidad is one of if not the nastiest place on earth. Town smells like shit, people don’t know about bins and industial complexes inject unprocessed waste into our rivers and sea.

  3. Personally there is only one major issue, that when addressed, with go a long way in resolving other pressing isues of public safety and quality of life. That major issue is EDUCATION. There is need to provide an educational system that is focused on development in an oil rich country.
We need to develop a social and cultural value for the technology and trades. Training people for the world of work needs our attention. We don’t need to have parallel academic scholarships but rather focus attention or changing the social value we present hold for academic education. Remember the doctor, lawyer, and other professionals need to live in houses, hare their cars repaired and roads built. We don’t need a University of T&T but rather a “Trinidad &Tobago Insittute of Arts and Technology. We need an educational system that caters to all learning styles and to all interests.

  4. The three major issues to my mind are:
    1. Drugs
    2.Corruption
    3. Distribution of wealth.

If you fix these three, tackling the drug lords, corruption at state, judicial and corporate level and giving people fair wages so things like food and housing are not always out of their reach, crime will decrease, people will live better.
As an aside Racism and Crime are tied at no. 4 for me.

  5. denise says Drugs is one of the main issues in Trinidad likewhile Corruption and Distribution of wealth; “What ever the hell is that; Maybe she will reply. 1. DRUGS was always there, but i will agree with her it is the the prevailing problem in the country;but how could that be control; By stiffer penalities, Enforcing the law; Better Trained Police to strategize Raids effectively, Combined Poice and Army Raids or Patrols in high Drugs Communities or More Coast Guard Patrols on coastal area. Maybe you are not updated with what’s going on presently, But the same people that’s complaining about this said problem [DRUGS] are that same folks that are also complaining and criticizing the Law Enforcement Officers like the Police, Army, and Coast Guard for having to much authority. An example; recently as you may know a fisherman was Shot by a Coast Guards man on patrol in a High volume Drug area. This Coast Guard man are brought up on murder charge, while family members joined by others are protesting against the Officers Judgement and the Defence Force itself concluding that they [The Coast Guard] has to much Authority; not that Office used too much force, but they have too much Authority. I don’t Know if you could remember or maybe you are younger, but i am 46, and how it was in my days; is that the Police Arrest You and Kick Your Butt for dessert, and that’s how the law was enforce and the reason you sleep with your doors open. Trinidad has to be ruled again by the ROD OF IRON. When a people was once rule like that it’s because way back then it had been concluded that’s the only way. You answer may be, this is civilization. My Question to you will be do you think the way Trinidadian are acting presently are civilize.? “No they are LAWLESS.” Let me give you an example; America arrested Saddam Husein for Killing and Persecuting his people, and are trying ever since to introduce Democracy as you will know his attempts are fruitless with the lost of thousands Killed in action as a result. Saddam himself Knew when he stated Thousand of lifes will be Losted, but they didn’t understand what he was refering to. Saddam knew that was the only way to stabilize his people and country, because they are a LAWLESS, MUDEROUS PEOPLE, and we are witnesses to that. 2. Corruption. I don’t have much to say about that, because Trinidad and Trindadian was always corrupted; Why do you think they call us tricky-dadian. 3. Distribution Of Wealth. I can’t assume what you mean, but in Trinidad there are those that work hard and there are those that don’t work hard enough. As you may know the most wealthy are the Indians They Worked very hard. Cutting Cane is no joke, but in there same community there are those that are the poorest. The Blacks; there are some of them that work hard and are wealthy also, but likewhiles there are some that are very poor. Why is that? They all were Slaves. It’s might be the way they themself Distributed, [the word you used] and or channeled there money; i can’t say, but who do you think should be blamed for that; Prime Minister Manning; “No”, he may have not been even born yet. In Trinidad no one become wealthy overnight. So my advice to you is please check your source. Dr. Rev.Singh

  6. Minimize unnecessary Spending and downsize the ranks of Goverment Officals.
The President of Trinidad and Tobago; What’s his or her function. In the USA every day you hear about the President, and only a fool wouldn’t know His function. If you go to Venezuela every day you here of there President, and only a fool wouldn’t know of his Duties or Function. Likewhiles any other country they will know the function of there President. I worked with the Trinidad Coast Guard in the day of the First President which was Elis Clarke in a Unit called the Honor Guard together with Police, and Soldiers as Security to both the President and Prime Minister. I saw the Honorible Dr Eric William every time i was on duty. I knew he actually Worked, but i never one Day saw the then President and the President that preceded, and I worked there for many year. All i Knew is; as the President of Trinidad he assumed the Rank of Commander in Cheif of the Defence Force as like the President of the USA. So if this President doesn’t work and has no Functions; then i don’t see the need for a President it’s just a Title, “Fire Him.”or call me a fool.
The Rank of Cheif of Defence Staff should be eliminated, it is not required to Run the Army. A Captain can run the Army effortless. The Minister of National Security make all the discission anyhow a He wasn’t even a Boy Scout.

And You could Finish the List with no effort; i promise you with just these Two Income Trinidad will be able to do a lot; much more.

    1. Crime
    2. High Food Prices which is a direct result of increasing inflation.
    3. Corruption every where you could think about

  8. i think trinidads biggest problem is the lack of small laws being enforced, the mentallity that criminals obviously have that they are above the law, in my opinion, spawns from being expemted from the law in everyday situations such as when police offers opt to turn away when they see simple traffic laws such as driving on the shoulder being broken, and with particular reference to driving on the shoulder, in addition to creating a law breaking mentallity, it also shows lack of respect and concern for fellow nationals and i think that it is the lack of respect and concern for fellow countrymen that has our once peaceful and beautiful twin isle state in the current situation we must endure

  9. three problems affecting this country is really simple:

    1) PNM
    2) UNC
    3) Abu Bakr

If we get rid ah them dem 3 Trini go be a paradise once more….come on people fight the good fight

    Quote | Posted October 26, 2006, 2:16 pm

  12. People like dan is one of the problems…we DO NOT have unlimited supply of Pitch…the level of the pitch lake has dropped over the years. Trinis feel every thing will never done and as a result are a wasteful people. THe oil and gas will never done too. All the wild meat will never done so use as much as you want.

  13. Our biggest problem is the fact that the people in authority, those who can make a difference in this country, don’t care about the people at all. Are you telling me that the Prime Minister of this country cannot see how the people of this country is suffering? Look at our food prices, I am vegetarian and I cannot afford to buy vegetables and healthy food! I have a good job and I still think twice about buying certain things. How do people who do not have a steady income survive in this country???

  14. i think that the major problems in tnt right now is the government:the politicians are mainly concern for themselves and for the wealthy people not the ones that need their support. the second problem is crime: our beautiful trinidad is becoming a ‘hell hole’ and many of our wealthy and educated memebers of society are migrating because of this, the third problem is our economy:for a country with that much industries i think we should be the most advance island in the caribbean we have the ability and the human resources to develop industries without foreign influences. i hope that the government would work efficiently to ensure that tnt progresses and move up from being a third world country!!!

  15. The MAJOR problem in Trinidad is FAILED policies carried out by the PNM.

    They have NO vision.

  16. Clearly Mr.Phil who seems to think that we do not need a UTT is quite misinformed as to what the institution is about.UTT is indeed a tech institue and in time will introduce the arts…furthurmore UWI has not only ruined the future of many of the nations youths as many students with deserving grades have not been accepted..in many cases applications were lost etc etc…and the list goes on…and on… and on….thanks to THE UNIVERSITY OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO ….these students (possibly our next presidents, prime ministers, UN reps.. etc)..have an institution who not only recognizes their potential but affords them the opportunity to maximize this potential. The UTT has recently come onto the scene and as a result it will take some time for the other faculties such as the arts to be developed. The reason that the engineering faculty is the first is because the energy sector is the very important to the country and it is obvious that people should be trained to function in this capacity. Therefore UTT should be allowed to carry on with their developments instead of people making accusations against the institution.

    Quote | Posted November 27, 2006, 2:58 pm

  17. Uttian…UTT and UWI are no different from one another….same shit, different pile! I challenge anyone with a degree from UTT to try and get into a masters programme at MIT, Oxford, McGill or any top university without having to go back and do any suplemental course work. Do not delude yourself. A UTT degree like a UWI degree is probably not worth the paper it is printed on.

  18. Randy, once you are not from a US University they make you do the supplemental courses.I(espcially form the Caribbean)…but unlike UWI …UTT are directly linked with U of Texas, U of Houston.John Hopkins…..and many top universities in the US and UK …so eventully there will certainly be smoother transitions through our doors…the recognition factor is a major problem many local students face but what are we to do cry about it ..of course not..we have to start somewhere and from then on the onus is on us to raise the bar….we cannot change those things that were there for decades overnight…
…with all being said UWi still messed around with lives of many ..who cares anyway..better days are ahead!

  20. Uttian…UTT does have that over UWI. But as you said, it will not change overnight. I am not holding my breath as the Trini mentality will quicker infiltrate UTT than the J.Hopkins mentality or the the UT mentality. Eventually, these respected Universities will want to wash their hands of UTT as is what happened with UWI.

UWI has ruined the lives of many as I have seen. Many of their graduates cannot perform in their jobs when they work overseas.

Maybe if UTT was kept out of politics then it would prosper. Not like UWI where the gov’t mandates that they take in more students while there is no room for them to sit in some lecture halls.

Having enough in the dry season for everyone.
Minimising flood damage to people and crops.

Try googling Trinidad + water + “failure to thrive”

I no longer have access to the full article, but basically it says, it’s not race or income that separates us it is access to clean, safe drinking water.

crime is rampant, and racism is alive and vibrant… its like trinidad now is equal to the 1970’s… patrick manning is a dictator… that is corrupt and the pnm’s victory only means more chaos and turbulence for the next 5 yrs…. i feel really sorry for the people of trinidad and tobago…

    3 issues
    1. crime and the government’s inability to get a grip on it… seems like the pnm government encourages crime
    2. drugs.
    3. economy

sad sad sad day for trinidad and tobago
